Crypto company Bitfury hired a specialist from the US Department of Justice

A DOJ representative will help track suspicious transactions to help fight crime. He will serve as project manager for Crystal's Bitcoin blockchain project.

Michael DuBose, who led the U.S. Department of Justice's Cybercrime and Intellectual Property Division for 11 years, is joining Bitfury as President of Crystal USA and will help bring the product to U.S. law enforcement professionals, fiscal officials, regulators, and other target audiences.

Bitfury, which is also a developer of bitcoin mining hardware, first introduced Crystal in January, offering firms and law enforcement the ability to track transactions on the bitcoin blockchain. The software evaluates transactions and addresses according to their risk, flagging bitcoin movements that may be linked to illegal activity.

The tool is expected to help authorities speed up investigations into cryptocurrency-related crimes. The firm's website says that within three hours Crystal tracked down a company that stole $5 billion last May using the WannaCry ransomware virus.

“If law enforcement had a similar tool to find criminals on the Bitcoin blockchain, they would quickly find them and could prevent future crimes,” Bitfury says.

Bitfury also sells Crystal software to companies that face potential legal consequences of accepting bitcoin, the origin of which is associated with black market activities. Using Crystal, “you can track transactions and check whether the bitcoin address you are receiving funds from is reliable,” Bitfury CEO Valery Vavilov told CoinDesk.
