Last May, Facebook announced the creation of an experimental blockchain group led by David Marcus, an executive who previously led the Facebook Messenger development team. Since then, the company has been secretly hiring a new group.
“The Blockchain Team is a startup within Facebook whose goal is to enable blockchain technology across Facebook. Our ultimate goal is to help billions of people save assets, share information, and provide fair financial services,” states the job advertisement.
And while it's unclear exactly what kind of blockchain products will work for Facebook, according to previous reports, the company is “very serious about creating its own cryptocurrency.”
Given the huge user base of Facebook and Instagram, “Facebook Coin” could become one of the main utility tokens, but the company's reputation is in question privacy and security could ultimately hinder its success in creating a decentralized platform or currencies.
