International shipping major FedEx is set to use a blockchain-based platform in its daily operations by joining the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA).
Freightwaves, a freight information company, says FedEx is developing standards for using blockchain technology on its platforms. "The company has launched a program that uses blockchain technology to store data needed to resolve disputes." - says the head of the company's strategic planning department, Christy Deil.
The project will determine what data needs to be kept in order to simplify the process of resolving disputes between customers sending and receiving packages through FedEx.
“We have millions of records logged in our system every day, and we want to use blockchain technology as a secure repository that will transform the logistics services industry. This is a promising opportunity to simplify the entire data exchange process and ensure its security. "In addition, blockchain platforms will allow customers to more efficiently track their packages not only while they are in FedEx's possession, but also afterward," said Kevin Humphrey, FedEx's head of IT.
The company outlined just a few uses of blockchain technology, but hopes to use many more.
