Photo storage on blockchain

On Wednesday, April 11, the Chinese search engine Baidu announced the launch of a blockchain platform for protecting the ownership of digital images.

The service, called Totem, tags each original image stored with real-time identification and other user data, storing it on a traceable and immutable blockchain.

According to Baidu, existing artificial intelligence capabilities, including image analysis and semantic meaning, will be used to create unique image tags, and blockchain technology will allow images to be tracked, reproduced and controlled to prove or disprove claims of copyright infringement rights.

Baidu announced that traditional photo hosting sites Getty Images and Visual China Group have already switched to this platform. The company did not specify whether the blockchain used for Totem will be free.

In addition to Baidu, Kodak announced the launch of such a blockchain platform for protecting image rights in January 2018. It also uses a distributed storage system to establish ownership and will offer photo communities KODAKCoin token to pay for and receive dividends from image licenses. Kodak's share price increased by 50% after announcing the launch of a blockchain platform and ICO. The release of the coins has been delayed for now because the company must evaluate the financial standing of potential investors in the United States in order to obtain permission from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
