The Democratic Party of Thailand, the country's main opposition party, has become the first major political party in the world to hold a primary election on the blockchain. Using an electronic voting system based on the Zcoin blockchain, the party successfully conducted its elections, with more than 120,000 voters participating.
The political party used IPFS in its voting to ensure transparency and accuracy. Party members could vote via a mobile app or at polling stations running on a Raspberry Pi system.
IPFS was then used to store encrypted data containing identification documents and vote tallies. The hashes were stored on the Zcoin blockchain, ensuring they were immutable and verifiable by Thai Election Commission members and Democratic Party candidates.
Speaking about the Democratic Party elections, Poramin Insom, founder and lead developer of Zcoin said:
I am very proud that Zcoin helped bring about the first major electronic voting, resulting in more voter participation and transparency. I believe this is a great achievement in the political history of our country and hope that other political parties or even governments not only in Thailand but also in the region can use blockchain technology to conduct large-scale electronic voting or polling.
Whereas previously a small group of 250 legislators and party branch chairmen chose the party leader who would be the presidential candidate, the use of blockchain technology has allowed more than 120,000 party members throughout the country to participate in the elections. country.
The encryption keys used in the voting process were shared using a cryptographic method called Shamir's Secret Sharing Scheme, which guarantees consensus to decrypt the full set of voting data. The voting data can only be decrypted with full consensus of all five parties, namely the three representatives of each candidate, the Thai Election Commission and the Democratic Party.
