A Taiwanese miner surnamed Yang was recently arrested and accused by authorities of illegally mining 100 million yuan ($14,500,000) in cryptocurrency. Young used $3.2 million in stolen electricity to power the mining rig.
According to EBC News, the accused operated 17 illegal mining centers disguised as shops in the municipalities of Taoyuan, Xinbei and Hsinchu. Young rented stores and used them as points of sale for dolls or Internet cafes, while at the same time he mined cryptocurrency in the basement of the store.
The accused allegedly hired electricians to manipulate the supply of electricity to various stores, thanks to which he could mine cryptocurrency absolutely free.
His activities were discovered after Taiwan's state-owned electricity company, Taiwan Power, investigated a faulty power supply at one of Yang's stores.
Wang Zhicheng, deputy head of the Taiwan Criminal Investigation Bureau, noted:
The defendant hired electricians who managed to break into the sealed meters. After that, he added private lines in order to use electricity for free.
