79% of US citizens know what cryptocurrency is

A recent survey conducted by research and analytics company YouGov found that the majority of adults in the United States are aware of at least one cryptocurrency. The company surveyed 1,202 US citizens and found out their opinions regarding the digital market.

According to the survey results, 79% of respondents know about the existence of at least one cryptocurrency.

These results show a significant increase in awareness of cryptocurrencies among US citizens. A similar study was conducted last December, and at that time, 70% of Americans had never heard of cryptocurrencies. In the same survey, 90% of 500 respondents did not know what an initial coin offering (ICO) was.

Bitcoin is the most popular crypto asset among respondents, with 71% having heard of the very first cryptocurrency. Other cryptocurrencies do not enjoy the same popularity among respondents. Ethereum (or more accurately Ether) and Litecoin, the two largest altcoins, are the second and third most popular cryptocurrencies. 13% of the Americans surveyed had heard about Ethereum, and 11% about Litecoin.

It is noteworthy that 87% of those who heard about Bitcoin had never bought, sold, or mined it. 9% have bought Bitcoin at some point before, and just 5% have mined the cryptocurrency.

Almost half (49%) of respondents who have heard of Bitcoin are glad they didn't buy it sooner and don't intend to buy it, 15% admitted that they regret not buying it sooner, but now it's too late. 3% of those surveyed said that they regretted not buying Bitcoin earlier because they planned to do so, but did not for some reason.

Respondents also expressed their thoughts on the development and adoption of cryptocurrencies in the next 10 years. A quarter of them believe that cryptocurrencies will be widely accepted or “somewhat widely accepted” in ten years. On the other hand, 34% believe that in ten years, cryptocurrencies will still not be widely adopted.
