Today a conference on the digital economy is being held in South Korea, with the participation of Vitalik Buterin, Bitcoin.com CEO Roger Ver, and Craig Wright, director of information security at BlockStream. An Ethereum developer commented on the dispute between Samson Mow and Roger Ver about which coin is cooler: bitcoin or bitcoin cash.
Roger Ver and Samson Moe, who are prominent and popular figures in the cryptocurrency community, have already given their presentations. They talked about the prospects of bitcoin and bitcoin cash and predictably started their favorite akyn song about storing information on the blockchain and beyond.
Vitalik broadcast on Twitter part of the event, including the above-mentioned controversy.
For those who don't know, Bitcoin Cash is a fork of Bitcoin that came about after Bitcoin faced the problem of a limited block size and a growing number of transactions in the queue. While Bitcoin seeks to increase transaction throughput with innovative solutions such as SegWit and the Lightning Network, which allow some transaction information to be stored off-chain, Bitcoin Cash proposes to increase the block size and continue to store information on the chain.
Both ways of scaling have their pros and cons, and if the two networks finally diverge in their direction of development, we will see how different protocols work.
Moe vs. Wehr
Roger Wehr began by saying that “continuing with the existing approach of increasing the block size is a safe path,” as opposed to Moe’s approach, which could cause fees to skyrocket to unsustainable levels. Vitalik agreed with this statement, and noted how great it is that “Bitcoin developers are making the node more productive, and it will eventually be able to accommodate and efficiently process larger blocks.”
Vitalik corrected Samson Ver’s inaccurate block size with SegWit, noting that the size is only theoretically 4 MB, but in practice it is only 1.3-2.4 MB depending on the power SegWit. Vitalik also commented on Samson’s comparison of the transaction queue to the queue at a restaurant, which was that you just have to wait if all the tables are occupied. Vitalik said that he would go to another restaurant rather than languish on the street.
During the discussion, Ver stated that the reliability of a currency is more important than the speed of transactions, to which Moe countered that it is the fast and convenient transactions that make a currency a popular means of payment.
The discussion ended with Geoff Pike asking Ver and Moe why there was such animosity between them.. Moe insists the problem is that bitcoin cash's developers have diverted the project from its original goal of making bitcoin a "store of value."
Ver retorted that the problem was only in the similar name.
Buterin commented on these words, citing an analogy between Ethereum and Ethereum Classic, explaining that it is not the name that determines the value of a currency.
Vitalik summed up that both speakers presented arguments that were completely unconvincing for those present and that these coins still have room to grow.
from the editor: Judging by what is happening, nothing changes in the relationship cryptocurrency developers over the past few years. Each of them proves that he is the good guy, and his competitor is a scoundrel. And yet no one thinks about what consequences this kind of war leads to. It would seem that now, when the digital world is being attacked on all fronts by global regulators and intelligence agencies, it would be worthwhile to postpone measuring the length of a competitor’s penis for a while and make strategic, informed decisions. After all, the very existence of the new financialsystem is at stake. But alas! The personal ambitions of the developers take precedence over their instinct of self-preservation.
