This week saw the launch of Bettergram, a desktop chat app built using Telegram's open source code. Bettergram is designed specifically for the crypto community and contains several improvements to the Telegram version, including a built-in cryptocurrency price tracker.
Over the past year, Telegram has become a favorite meeting place for representatives of the crypto community. This is the center through which the bulk of ICOs and trading groups pass, and in which the main representatives of the crypto community “sit”. Despite some drawbacks - frequent downtime, inability to temporarily mute noisy groups, limited customization - Telegram is still the best platform for group chats. Alternative platforms today do not compete with Telegram's versatility and network effect.
Bettergram is essentially a fork of Telegram, with the same desktop features, but without some of the drawbacks that users do not like about Telegram. In particular, users have long asked to increase the number of pinned chats; Telegram allows you to pin only five chats. Bettergram allows you to pin up to 50 chats, and there are four tabs to help you filter chat topics: favorites, DMs, groups, and announcements. Uploaded images are displayed in a line rather than as a file like Telegram for PC.
Perhaps the most useful feature that Bettergram comes with is the ability to view the latest prices of the 10 major cryptocurrencies. This can be done by clicking on the emoji button in the lower right corner of the chat, after which four tabs will open: prices, emojis, stickers and GIFs. The information is provided by Live Coin Watch, and although this feature is not customizable and limited in scope, it is great for a quick overview of prices.
As an open source project, Bettergram's source code can be verified. However, users should always be careful when installing third-party software, especially when storing cryptocurrency wallets and other sensitive data on the same desktop device. As a precaution, some cryptocurrency holders choose to store their funds on a remote or separate device, be it a mobile device or desktop, that is not used for social media.
Compared to desktop software such as Chrome and Station, Bettergram's Mac client does not place excessive demands on RAM or CPU.. Thus, it is a viable alternative for avid Telegram users who want more customization and the ability to check prices on the go.
