China's Ministry of Public Security has developed a blockchain system that will help securely store evidence collected during police investigations.
According to information released by the China Intellectual Property Office on Tuesday, the ministry's research department filed a patent application in November 2017 for a blockchain system that would provide more transparent and tamper-proof data storage that cannot be changed, deleted or destroyed.
Currently, such information is stored on centralized cloud platforms, but a potential problem with this procedure is that data sent through cloud providers can be easily changed. In addition, the lack of an effective way to control the cloud storage process makes it unreliable.
The proposed blockchain system involves storing a copy of the data on the blockchain, after transferring it to the cloud and confirming it with the signatures of both parties. Thus, the system will store an immutable copy of the information, as well as the data of the persons who initiated the transaction, the time and date of its implementation.
Although the technology described in the application largely reflects the basic mechanisms of standard blockchains, it represents a precedent for its application by one of the 26 ministries of the State Council of China, which controls all the country's police forces.
Additionally, the Ministry of Public Security is not the only body interested in taking advantage of blockchain technology. China's National Audit Bureau is also considering using blockchain to store audit results provided to it by provincial and local bureaus.
