Fraudsters use the authority of politicians

Crypto scammers have long been using the trick with famous personalities to deceive gullible users, but now, instead of businessmen and influential people in the crypto industry, they have politicians and government officials in their arsenal. In yet another scam on Facebook, scammers, using a photo of New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, called for investing in the cryptocurrency startup Bitcoin Revolution.

In addition, the posts stated that the New Zealand Treasury had invested about 250 million New Zealand dollars in this startup: "The New Zealand Treasury has invested half of the country's foreign exchange reserves in a new project Bitcoin Revolution, which, according to the government, will define the future of the financial industry."

Late last year, there were also advertisements claiming that the previous Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key, allegedly earned 300 million New Zealand dollars by investing in cryptocurrency.

This kind of fake provocations are widespread and affect public people around the world. Last month, for example, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) warned citizens about the spread of a Bitcoin investment scam that was said to have been endorsed by MAS Chairman and Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

In August, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, also fell victim to cryptocurrency scammers who used his photo to promote a fake Bitcoin giveaway on social media. For the same purpose, other scammers hacked the account of Elon Musk, co-founder and CEO of the electric car company Tesla.

To carry out similar scams, scammers compromised Vitalik Buterin, Hollywood actor William Shatner, tech entrepreneur and crypto evangelist John McAfee, and Virgin Group founder and chairman Sir Richard Branson.
