Samourai reaches a new level

On May 3, one of the most confidential Bitcoin wallets, Samourai Wallet, announced on its blog the release of new updates that will add many different features. The new update will include full support for bech32, Blotzmann and STONEWALL, as well as an expanded range of Ricochet transactions. All innovations make the wallet fully compatible with BIP84, and also capable of supporting Segwit addresses.

Full bech32 support

Bech32 support provides a built-in way to encode Segwit addresses. Thanks to this innovation, Samourai Wallet is now fully BIP84 compatible. This means that users can now send external messages to encoded bech32 addresses, as well as receive data to their own bech32 addresses. Bech32 addresses start with “bc1” and are not backward compatible. However, Samourai Wallet can also generate Segwit addresses starting with “3”, which by default will be backwards compatible with all Bitcoin wallets.

Boltzmann and STONEWALL

In 2017, following OXT's acquisition of the blockchain research platform, Samourai Wallet introduced Boltzmann. This process involves conducting transactions using the Boltzmann protocol. The Samourai team found that transactions sent using BIP126 may result in smaller losses than expected, hence they are more susceptible to batch analysis. BIP126 determines the optimal method for conducting a transaction and minimizes the leakage of personal data. As a replacement for BIP126, the wallet introduces the new STONEWALL system.

STONEWALL is a new sending type available to Samourai users at no additional cost. It is enabled by default and can be disabled in the transaction settings. STONEWALL is activated much more often than BIP126, which means it can process more transactions. According to the Samourai team's tests, STONEWALL provides a much higher level of entropy. Using STONEWALL, Samourai Wallet will create a transaction system that mimics CoinJoin transactions.

“Samourai users will be able to continue to see the Boltzmann integration progress in the near future, and will also be able to calculate transaction fees before that information appears in the wallet,” the company said.

Improved Ricochet transactions

Ricochet is one of the most popular wallet features. This function distances the sender's address from the recipient's address. The company has updated Rocichet to use built-in Segwit bech32 addresses, which will lead to cheaper commission fees.. With the introduction of the new algorithm, users will also have access to a much higher level of privacy by reducing the Ricochet transaction fingerprint on the blockchain, especially when combined with the “Payment Number” feature
