The Turkish National Police's anti-cybercrime department has detained eleven people suspected of stealing bitcoins worth more than $80,000, local media reported.
Istanbul police launched an investigation after 14 people filed complaints that their cryptocurrency wallets were hacked and funds were stolen. Investigators confirmed the incident, with damages amounting to 437,000 Turkish lira, or more than $80,000.
Police tracked down a group of hackers who allegedly compromised users' emails, stole passwords and hacked into cryptocurrency wallets. Ten suspects were reportedly arrested and one was released pending trial. Two fake passports, 18 mobile phones and SIM cards, 22 memory cards and other items allegedly used in the attacks were seized from the suspects.
Prosecutors said the stolen funds were transferred to multiple addresses and then converted into fiat.
Hackers are constantly on the hunt for Bitcoin as demand for the cryptocurrency increases. Last month, the Canadian cryptocurrency exchange MapleChange was forced to cease operations due to a hack and theft of about 913 bitcoins worth $6 million.
