CryptoKitties is a new blockchain game where you can buy, breed and trade virtual cats with Ethereum coins. The project was launched a week ago by AxiomZen and at first glance resembles a blockchain version of the famous Pokemon cards. Over the past few days, the project has gained explosive popularity.
To understand the scale of this “explosion”, it is enough to accept the fact that the game took 1st place in the number of transactions on the Ethereum network (currently it accounts for 10 to 15% of all transactions).
Users spend a lot of money on buying and breeding cats - at the time of writing, the volume of transactions amounted to 2.8 million dollars. The minimum price at which you can purchase a kitten is less than 1 USD, while the very first kitten was sold for 247 ETH, which is almost 120,000 USD.
One kitten, for example, from the “zero generation” and with “jaguar features” was sold for $23.6 thousand, another unique crypto cat was sold for an impossible $117 thousand. For this money you can buy a car and an apartment, not a virtual animal. But this does not stop the “breeders” of rare kittens. They buy in pairs, crossbreed, breed new ones, sell: kittens with rare traits are more expensive, those with constantly occurring ones are less in demand.
More and more users are involved in the process, generating an endless number of cats.
