A major software developer plans to combat online piracy using blockchain transparency features.
Windows OS and programs from the Office series have always been popular with pirates. Many PC users install software downloaded from third-party resources in order to get them for free. Therefore, it is not surprising that Microsoft is against piracy.
In a document published by Microsoft Research, Microsoft employees said that a blockchain-based system could help solve this problem.
The report, titled “Argus: a completely transparent system for anti-piracy campaigns” presents a new solution built on the Ethereum blockchain. Argus will use watermarking technology and track pirated content back to its source.
