Vladimir van der Laan, Bitcoin Core developer, believes that the acquisition of GitHub by Microsoft is a worthwhile reason to think about moving the Bitcoin code repository from GitHub to an independent platform.
Reports began to emerge over the weekend that Microsoft had reached an agreement with GitHub to acquire the web service for $7.5 billion, with both sides confirming the information on Monday.
The move is highly controversial, as Microsoft has long had a reputation for opposing source code initiatives. The corporation began to participate in the development of source code initiatives thanks to the change of the company's CEO to Satya Nadella. Many still remember the statement of Steve Ballmer, the company's former CEO, that “Linux is a cancer.”
It is worth mentioning that a distributed version control system called Git was first used to manage the development of the Linux kernel. The GitHub web service is based on the Git version control system.
Although GitHub is a commercial organization, it provides a wide range of free services for open source projects, and also stores the source code for almost every cryptocurrency protocol.
Many people believe that the acquisition of GitHub will have little impact on cryptocurrencies, and some suggest that Microsoft may add new features that could make life easier for developers.
Even so, Vladimir van der Laan, the lead maintainer of the Bitcoin Core repository on GitHub, tweeted that this event is the “beginning of a long and painful process” for the platform, and that the Bitcoin project should store the source code elsewhere.
When asked whether the repository should be moved to another platform, he replied:
“Yes. I consider this step the beginning of a long and painful process of obsolescence. Quite possibly, with GitHub will do the same thing as with CodeplexTo be clear, many Bitcoin developers have already raised the issue of creating an independent infrastructure in the future. This could speed up this process.”
Van der Laan has already announced that he has canceled the paid subscription of GitHub, and also created his own git repository for Bitcoin, which is available using the TorV3 service.
“I’m not going to pay another Microsoft tax,” he said.
