Sirin Labs, the company behind the Finney phone, has changed its plans, abandoning IOTA in favor of adopting Ethereum for its blockchain-enabled mobile phone.
Since the announcement of the Finney phone, all the news has been that Sirin Labs will be working closely with IOTA to develop its device. Due to the constant attention of the Network to Internet of Things The public has been eagerly awaiting news of this promising collaboration.
However, according to reports ETHNews Moshe Hogeg, CEO of Sirin Labs personally told them that the two projects had diverged: "We are not with IOTA, we looked into it and decided to take a different path."
It appears that the Sirin Labs team will now focus on developing a private network based on Ethereum: "At launch we will use the blockchain... FINNEY will operate through a series of full nodes hosted by Sirin Labs."
This move is somewhat surprising to those who have been following the project closely, and although Sirin Labs did not specify the reasons why they made this decision, it may be due to the lack of maturity of the IOTA project.
It should be noted that according to the information published by Mr. Hogeg, it is very likely that the Finney phone will be released in November 2018, so a strong blockchain will be necessary to ensure the success of the project.
The Sirin Labs team strongly emphasizes that using the Ethereum network is a temporary solution. The medium to long term vision is to implement a third generation blockchain on which they can reliably launch their token in terms of scalability, speed and security.
To achieve these goals, they considered several options, including IOTA and Cardano; however, the team's prospects seem to point to the development of its own blockchain as the final solution.
The Finney phone will cost around US$1,000 and can be pre-ordered through the official Sirin Labs website. It will be powered by the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 processor, which means it will have the best mobile processor available in the market, as well as the best graphics chip. The internal storage capacity is 128 GB, expandable up to 2 TB via card slot and 6 GB RAM, making it a strong competitor among the top smartphones of 2018.
