US wants 'comprehensive strategy' to combat crypto fraud

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday creating a working group tasked with developing guidelines for investigating cryptocurrency crimes. The Market Integrity and Consumer Fraud Task Force will focus its efforts on investigating economic cybercrime cases.

Notably, the order mentions “digital currency fraud,” which will be one of the areas for which the task force will “issue guidelines for the investigation and prosecution of cases involving cryptocurrency crimes.”

It is unclear what position the guidance will take, but the task force may eventually produce some kind of report on this area for the Trump administration.

It would not be surprising to see the Trump administration moving in this direction. Earlier this year, the US government indicated that it was “working on a comprehensive strategy” regarding cryptocurrencies, with a focus on combating fraud. In February, the US Department of Justice formed a cybersecurity task force that is also studying cryptocurrencies and investigating cybercrimes.

“Many of these schemes revolve around Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies that are not circulated in the traditional financial system,” Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said at the time. “We are currently working with our cybersecurity working group to develop a comprehensive strategy to combat such schemes.”.
