63,767 iPhone owners have entrusted Hannuri Law to represent their interests in court against Apple. A class action lawsuit in the Seoul Central District Court has attracted a record number of participants in one lawsuit. Consumers are demanding compensation from Apple after the company admitted that its operating software updates intentionally slowed down older iPhone models.
Users accused Apple of hiding the fact of deliberately slowing down an iPhone with a worn-out battery. At the end of last year, company representatives admitted to limiting the processor clock speed - as insurance against sudden shutdown of the smartphone.
This measure is due to the characteristics of lithium-ion batteries used in older models. The battery cannot withstand high loads when the charge level is low, when there is a high level of wear, or simply in the cold. iPhone may turn off at peak power consumption levels to protect electronic components from damage. Apple engineers pay special attention to smoothing out sudden power peaks that cause problems with older batteries. Last year, the company managed to solve this problem with an iOS update that reduced the speed of the iPhone.
Although Apple said this was a necessary measure to prevent devices from suddenly shutting down, consumers insist that the company should have notified users about this before making the decision.
The law firm insists that Apple knew that the iPhone's speed would slow down after the iOS update, but deliberately did not notify users to avoid losing consumers.
Hannuri Law believes that Apple should pay 12.7 billion won ($11.90 million) in compensation or 200,000 won. to each of its clients.
Earlier, in early March, four hundred users from the United States filed a similar lawsuit against the company. The very first lawsuit was filed almost immediately after Apple's statement by Los Angeles resident Stefan Bogdanovich.
