The Los Angeles Dodgers, a professional baseball club of the US National League, is going to hold a Digital Bobblehead Night promotion to distribute tokens to fans using the popular ERC-20 platform created by Ethereum. Unlike regular transaction tokens, the club creates name tokens convertible into ETH for its star players, namely Clayton Kershaw, Justin Turner or Kenley Jansen.
The press release states that tokens will be randomly given to the first 40,000 fans attending the Dodgers game against the San Diego Padres on September 21st. Fans will receive a card with a code, after entering which they will be able to transfer funds to their Ethereum wallet.
Marketing Director and Executive Vice President of the L.A. Club Dodgers Lon Rosen believes Digital Bobblehead Night will help the club “explore a new industry with fans” and “usher in a new era of promotions and digital collectibles.”
The Dodgers are the first athletes to give away tokens, but not the first to use cryptocurrency in the sports industry.
In June, the Sacramento Kings basketball club, in partnership with the mining company MiningStore held a charity event, installing MiningStore equipment for mining ether at the indoor stadium in order to raise funds to finance a scholarship program.
Even though the price of Ether was not very encouraging over the weekend, adoption by the baseball sports club could have a positive effect on the long term.
