Hackers who stole more than $500 million worth of NEM cryptocurrency from Japanese cryptocurrency exchange Coincheck last week may have successfully spent a small portion of their ill-gotten gains.
Filipino company Appsolutely received about 2,000 NEM coins through an ICO on Thursday. The payment, which was equivalent to about $2,000 at the time of the theft, was made from one of the many accounts between which the stolen coins were distributed. It is unknown whether the ICO account owner received the tokens in exchange for payment.
On Friday, 1,100 stolen NEM coins were sent to a Czech cryptocurrency exchange. Another portion of the stolen coins was sent to exchanges in the United States and New Zealand, according to a spokesperson for the NEM.io Foundation, which has developed software to track the movements of stolen cryptocurrency.
The company asked cryptocurrency exchanges around the world to refuse to provide services if they transferred illegally obtained NEM coins to them. But if further distribution of stolen coins continues across different accounts, some of them may be converted into other cryptocurrencies or cash.
