The internal system of the Block.one company was attacked by hackers. Taking advantage of investors' overwhelming desire for free cheese giveaways and various promotions, they managed to lighten the wallets of EOS (EOS) and Ethereum (ETH) token holders by millions of dollars.
Hackers, this time, took a simpler route using the human factor together with technology. The attackers did not look for specific protocol vulnerabilities, but simply hacked the internal Block.one email service. Cybercriminals used the resulting list of investor email addresses for fake mailings.
Messages from the attackers were sent on behalf of the company with a hyperlink to a website with the domain name “https://xn--es-8bb.com”. The site, both in structure and design, is very similar to the original one, and at the same time, web browsers translated the false link as eȯs.com., consonant with the real site “eos.io”, and distinguished by a small, almost imperceptible, dot over the “o”. Celebrating the completion of the crowdsale, the fake site offered free “unsold tokens” of EOS, distributed in the last two days of the ICO.
Naturally, to participate in the free distribution of elephants, it was necessary to enter the personal key of the cryptocurrency wallet. There were more than enough crypto enthusiasts who showed a desire to gain access to gift tokens, which allowed attackers to obtain personal data and steal about a million dollars in EOS and Ethereum.
Block.one email operated through cloud software provider Zendesk. After the incident, the company hastily abandoned the services of this complex.
Block.one, the main EOS ICO company, launched in June 2017 and claims to be the largest ICO in the world, having managed to attract more than $4 billion. Block.one, which issues EOS tokens, completed its ICO, which lasted almost a year and in night June 2 left the Ethereum network launching its own. The EOS project also published the first version of the complete wallet EOSIO v1.0 for its blockchain.
The price of EOS, after the launch of the main network, increased by almost 10%, and it confidently holds its position in the top five cryptocurrencies.
