2018 will be a record year for the creation of cryptocurrency funds

Despite persistent bearish trends and unfavorable regulatory conditions in various countries, the number of new crypto funds this year is expected to break last year's record.

According to California-based crypto search engine Crypto Fund Research, 156 cryptocurrency funds were created last year, and this year their number is already 96 and is projected to reach 165 by the end of the year. And this is when you consider that back in 2016, only 42 cryptocurrency funds were launched.

In total, there are now 466 cryptocurrency funds in the world, of which 55% are hedge funds, 42% are venture funds, and 3% are private equity funds that arose during the emergence of some blockchain companies.

“If 2017 was the “year of bitcoin,” then 2018 will be the “year of crypto funds,” writes Crypto Fund Research.

According to Crypto Fund Research, the hedge fund sector has become the fastest growing segment. In addition, the best hedge funds of 2017 were cryptocurrency funds. However, the value of the assets held in cryptocurrency funds is less than 0.1% of the value of the assets of regular hedge funds. In terms of assets under management, analysis by Crypto Fund Research shows that 28 crypto funds held $100 million worth of assets. These funds include Polychain Capital, Arrington XRP and Galaxy Digital Assets.

The United States leads the world in the number of cryptocurrency funds. There are 252 cryptocurrency funds here, of which 84 are registered with the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Second place goes to China/Hong Kong (34) and third place to Great Britain (29). California is home to 121 US crypto funds, of which 55 are in San Francisco, making the city the world leader with the most funds, followed by New York (44) and London (25).

"Despite the positive outlook, there are concerns that with a prolonged bear market, some crypto funds will not survive," says Josh Gneizda of Crypto Fund. Research.
