According to Xinhua News Agency, after a local power company noticed a sudden jump in electricity consumption, a significant loss was discovered on one of the electrical lines.
The company initiated an investigation, during which local police discovered and confiscated 600 mining rigs and 8 high-power fans. This is the largest energy theft in the country in recent years, the report says.
Police have arrested six suspected criminals who police say used the method of shunting the meter's current coil to evade paying electricity bills.
A similar method was used by miners in the city of Wuhan, two of whom were also arrested, according to information published on the official news website of the Prosecutor General of the Supreme People's Procuratorate of the People's Republic of China.
According to reports, since March 2017, a group of individuals used an empty, abandoned warehouse for bitcoin mining, while avoiding electricity bills in the same way as the accused in the city of Tianjin.
