Ross Ulbricht marks fifth anniversary of prison sentence

“Ross’s prison sentence turned five years old on October 1st,” Ulbricht’s family wrote in an email to news.bitcoin.com. "On this sad anniversary, we are launching a new project that will reveal many previously unknown details of the Ross Ulbricht case. You can read or listen to the first episode now."

The Silk Road was a shadow trading platform that brought together buyers and sellers. Users could purchase a variety of goods and services, many of which were illegal. Buyers and sellers used Bitcoin (BTC) as a means of payment, and these were some of the first cases of real use of cryptocurrency.

In their letter to the public, the prisoner's family wrote:

And although five years in prison can make anyone cruel, this is not about Ross. Throughout his long sentence, he has never lost his spirit, and yet he is liked by prisoners, guards and staff alike. Because of his beliefs of peace and non-violence, he recently refused to take part in an attack on another prisoner. This decision angered other prisoners, and the guards had to place Ross in solitary confinement. He could have avoided all this, but he didn't want to hurt another person. Despite all this, the judge ruled that Ross was so dangerous that he should die in prison.

Indeed, a former cellmate wrote about Ulbricht: "...Ross always demonstrates a peaceful and positive demeanor. He spends his days sharing positive thoughts with other prisoners and trying to encourage them to peacefully resolve differences. On several occasions he expressed his extreme disgust for violence in any form. Often Ross performs incredibly kind acts towards others.”

The first of six episodes has already debuted on the FreeRoss.org website. While Ross is in prison, his family and supporters have launched an online petition calling on President Donald Trump to consider a pardon. The petition has currently collected 85,000 signatures.
