Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey on the dangers of cryptocurrencies and the prospects of blockchain

“There are serious concerns about the use of cryptocurrency to finance terrorism and money laundering,” Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Sismek said in a tweet this Wednesday. Sismek also devoted a number of messages to blockchain technology, which, in his opinion, has “undeniable positive qualities.”

On the state of the global economy, the Deputy Prime Minister spoke as follows: “The short-term outlook remains optimistic, but the medium-term outlook is clouded by factors such as an aging population and slow productivity growth.”

The main risk factors for the economy, according to him, are trade protectionism, global imbalances, excessive risk-taking, pro-cyclical fiscal policy and financial deregulation.

“The roof needs to be repaired while the sun is still shining,” he added.

He touched upon the topic of taxation of digital businesses and said that the transition to a crypto-economy could create problems for the tax authorities of many countries.

“The international tax system, with its traditional approach, is losing its meaning,” he said, adding, however, that the digital economy cannot avoid being taxed. The political situation is fragile, and some altcoins are starting to feel increased political pressure.

“Countries must first invest in the development of qualified personnel, science and advanced digital technologies,” Sismek concluded.
