America's most famous female politician, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, believes that cryptocurrencies could ultimately lead to the downfall of entire countries.
At the Bloomberg New Economic Forum on Friday, Clinton said governments around the world should be concerned about the growing popularity of cryptocurrencies and their threat to the traditional financial system.
Another area that requires more attention from governments is the spread of cryptocurrency, because it could undermine the dollar's role as a reserve currency and destabilize entire countries.
Just a couple of months ago, the US Treasury also said that cryptocurrencies pose a threat to US sanctions and the dominant role of the dollar in the global economy. He called for strong action to protect national security.
The Treasury also noted the role of cryptocurrencies in cybercrime, as criminals bypass the traditional dollar financial system to cover their tracks.
