Documents have leaked onto the dark web that confirm that a block explorer owned by Chainalysis shared information with law enforcement.
According to CoinDesk, Chainalysis owns and operates WalletExplorer.com. Like any other block explorer, it helps track the history of transactions on the blockchain. But in addition to this, WalletExplorer does something that other browsers do not - “collect IP addresses of suspicious users.”
The documents, which are supposed to be screenshots of a Chainalysis presentation to law enforcement in Italy, note:
Using this data set, we can provide law enforcement with important clues that help match IP addresses with corresponding cryptocurrency wallets. In addition, we can analyze any available IP address to find its other BTC wallets.
Chainalysis has never publicly disclosed its ties to WalletExplorer. A company spokesman declined to comment on the situation.
