Credit instead of work: scammers issue instant loans to Ukrainians

Ukrainians risk falling into the clutches of scammers by posting job advertisements on websites.

A new type of scam is spreading online using job search sites where job seekers post their advertisements. Instead of the desired job, Ukrainians receive loan debts.

Having chosen a victim, scammers contact her via Viber or WhatsApp and offer a vacancy with favorable working conditions. After the online interview, scammers leave the applicant waiting for several days. Then they tell you the good news about being accepted into the company. For supposedly official registration, they ask you to send a package of documents:

  • passport;
  • work book;
  • driver’s license;
  • selfie with an unfolded passport.

Such a package of documents is necessary to apply for “instant loans online,” which is what scammers take advantage of.

As a result, instead of work, Ukrainians receive huge amounts of debt to financial organizations.

Similar fraud existed before, however, during the period of quarantine and mass transition to remote work, the scheme received new opportunities and the number of its victims is growing.
