On February 23, the American exchange Coinbase sent out notifications to 13 thousand users that their data would be transferred to the US Tax Service (IRS). IRS officials asked Coinbase back in July last year to hand over information about 500,000 users in order to find tax evaders. At the end of autumn 2017, the exchange received a court order in which the Tax Service asked to provide data for 14,000 clients instead of half a million.
Currently, Coinbase is known to have sent out notifications to nearly 13,000 customers. According to representatives of the platform, “this is a small but significant victory for the exchange and its users.”
Last Friday, letters were sent to these users in which the company reported that within 21 calendar days it was forced to submit the following data to the IRS: TIN, name, residential address, as well as transaction history from 2013 to 2015.
The letter also specified that clients should “urgently contact contact a lawyer" if they have questions or doubts.
Even the famous Bitcoin evangelist Andreas Antonopoulos was included in this list. The latter wrote on Twitter that he was not surprised to be included in the list, but had already paid his taxes a long time ago.
Recall that the legal proceedings between Coinbase and the government have been dragging on for about two years, after the IRS filed a lawsuit against an “unidentified person” in one of the Californian US courts.
