The creator of VKontakte and Telegram, Pavel Durov, is preparing to release his own cryptocurrency called Gram. Thus, Durov will begin to monetize the Telegram messenger and provide Asian countries with a digital payment system.
The new project will be called TON (Telegram Open Network) and the first promotional video in the style of “Star Wars” has already been released. The platform will be integrated with many of the most popular messaging apps. TON will use so-called “light wallets”, and its currency will be called Gram.
Former VKontakte employee and Durov’s subordinate Anton Rosenberg believes that entering the ICO will ensure the existence of Telegram, which “has been bringing only expenses for more than five years.”
A former member of the VKontakte team said that Durov will look for main support in Iran, where international payment systems do not work due to American sanctions, and Gram can become a panacea, also in Uzbekistan, with whose companies Durov began to closely cooperate.
