We subconsciously associate the word cryptocurrency with the word bitcoin, because it appeared earlier than everyone else and costs more than others. But does it surpass other, newer types of cryptocurrencies in terms of characteristics and capabilities offered? Below are some altcoins that could one day completely surpass their progenitor.
Ethereum
Although many people think that Bitcoin and Ethereum are similar, there is one significant difference. Ethereum can be more than just a currency. It also supports the function of smart contracts based on blockchain technology and can therefore be used for broader purposes. Bitcoin is now used only as an investment and less often as a means of payment. Ethereum ranks second in popularity and capitalization after Bitcoin.
Ripple
Ripple was developed exclusively for financial institutions and has already been successfully adopted by many of them. Transactions based on Ripple technology are processed faster than with other types of cryptocurrencies and are cheaper, regardless of which country the payment is sent to. Another advantage is a large number of partners, including MoneyGram International. Nevertheless, there are plenty of skeptics and Ripple still has a lot to prove to them.
Nano
Nano is capable of processing 7,000 transactions per second and over time may even compete with Visa. The secret lies in the blockchain structure, which allows payments to be processed incredibly quickly.
Qtum
Qtum also supports smart contract functionality. It embodies the best qualities of Bitcoin and Ethereum, turning them into a unique network. But the reason Qtum may be more promising than bitcoin is because of recent partnerships struck with Chinese companies that could help Qtum emerge from bitcoin's shadow.
