Bitcoin legalization critic arrested in El Salvador

The National Civil Police of El Salvador released a statement that Mario Gomez was detained in connection with an investigation into financial fraud.

Local media reported that police detained a computer and cryptocurrency expert who criticized the government's decision to legalize Bitcoin for several hours. Law enforcement seized his phone and tried to gain access to the computer of his mother, Elena de Gomez. A few hours later, the suspect was released.

According to police officials, Gomez's detention was related to an investigation into a financial crime.

Gomez's mother said:

Mario often participates in forums, events and on social networks, he often criticizes the government. If we see that the country is moving backwards, we need to talk about it and honestly express our opinions.

Since the adoption of the bill on the legalization of BTC, two major protests have taken place in the country. The majority of Salvadorans still do not support the president's initiative.
