Passware, Inc., a provider of a set of paid utilities for guessing (or determining) file passwords, announced that Passware Kit can now recover passwords from popular Bitcoin wallets: Blockchain.com and Bitcoin Core.
According to the Blockchain.com website, customer support cannot help a user regain access to their wallet if they have forgotten or lost their password. “The whole point is that we do not have access to your wallets and your passwords,” the website states.
“Law enforcement agencies around the world realize that cryptocurrency gives criminals virtually unlimited access to anonymous funds transfer services,” said Dmitry Sumin, CEO of Passware. “Computer forensics investigators investigating cases of contraband transactions, money laundering, and tax evasion, until the release of the latest version of the Passware Kit, had virtually no way to recover a suspect's password.”
In order to recover a password, the program requires a wallet file, which is usually called wallet.aes.json (Blockchain.com wallets) or wallet.dat (Bitcoin Core wallets). These files are most often stored on the suspect's computer or can be downloaded from the website of the desired wallet. On a single GPU, the software achieves speeds of 500,000 passwords per second.
This program is designed for computer forensics and criminal investigation specialists, so it is included in the Forensic version of the Passware Kit. Although anyone can purchase it, its price is quite high - $995 for a year of use.
