Starting today, a Japanese car dealer will sell cars for Bitcoin

One of Japan's largest used car dealerships, Idom Inc, has announced a partnership with cryptocurrency exchange Bitflyer to enable Bitcoin payments at all of its branches across the country.

From today, this opportunity is available at 25 Idom Inc offices located in major cities: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansae, Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu. But going forward, the company plans to accept Bitcoin at another 550 of its company dealerships across Japan and abroad. The company also has branches in the USA and New Zealand

Idom Inc sells used cars. It has operated a network of dealerships that buy and sell used cars throughout Japan since 1994.

The company says it has the largest share of the domestic used car market, ranking first in terms of sales volume and number of purchases.  In addition, the group also owns a 67% stake in Australian car dealer Buick Holdings Pty Ltd.

Idom announced last week that one of its networks, called Liberala, will begin accepting Bitcoin on December 20. The chain specializes in cars such as Bentley, BMW and Audi.

Idom stores will reportedly accept Bitcoin payments of up to 100 million yen (about $888,000) per purchase.

Earlier this month, another Japanese used car company, L'operaio, began accepting Bitcoin at three locations in Tokyo. L'operaio was founded in 1992 and specializes in the import of premium European cars.
