Unique libertarian town in Switzerland plans to introduce Bitcoin as its currency

The population of the Norwegian city of Liberstad plans to introduce Bitcoin as a national currency. The settlement was founded in a rural part of the country with the goal of attracting libertarians from all over Scandinavia, creating a unique living environment.

John Holmesland, the company's general manager, spoke to the publication about how the project is progressing.

“Initially, the team aims to create a completely private city, where all land is privately owned and all public services are provided by private individuals on a voluntary basis,” shares Holmesland.

“Our long-term overall goal is to one day make Liberstad an autonomous city-state with its own economy in the same way as Hong Kong, Singapore or even Monaco, but without politics and taxes,” he added.

Residents of this small city should consider the absence of aggression the norm and advocate the inviolability of private property. Currently, they pay for the cost of land plots and the construction of cottages with bitcoins, and in the future they want to recognize cryptocurrency as the official currency.

In Liberstad, basic city services such as kindergartens, schools, hospitals, nursing homes, private security, courts and insurance companies will be provided “internally or through voluntary organizations, free from any taxes or compulsions.”

According to him, more than 500 have already been made for the acquisition of land plots. inquiries, and at least 120 people have placed their orders. Of this group, 63 people have already paid the deposit.

For 63 people, 10.5 hectares of land have been reserved in Liberstad. These are the people who contributed the required amount and signed the agreement. As a result, only 4.5 hectares remain to be sold, after which we will be able to begin registering ownership of the plots. “We use the Bitpay payment service for all our Bitcoin transactions. We will also encourage all other businesses in Liberstad to do the same,” Holmesland said.

Currently there are two national units circulating in Liberstad – Bitcoin and Krona. To become the owner of 100 square meters of land, you will have to part with 35 thousand Norwegian kroner, equivalent to $4,000.

Bitpay wallets will be used to carry out transactions in cryptocurrency, and they are offered to all entrepreneurs in advisory form. Liberstad Drift AS will in the future offer discounts to those clients who prefer Bitcoin.. Thus, such a financial policy motivates residents to switch to digital money. Now all possible measures are being taken to promote cryptocurrency, since the founders of the project consider it the freest payment unit on the planet.

“We also plan to use blockchain technology as a system for registering contracts, property documents, identity cards, etc.,” said the project manager.

Moreover, the team plans to create its own currency for the domestic market, which will be tied to Bitcoin so that transactions are completed faster and cheaper.

There are two more similar ones projects that intend to use Bitcoin as their currency. The most famous is Liberland - an entire country that settled on a piece of land between the Czech Republic and Croatia. Less well known is the Fort Galt project in Valdivia, Chile. The idea of this municipality is much closer in spirit to Liberstad - it offers jobs, holiday homes and permanent residence for lovers of a free lifestyle from all over the world.
