Sony will protect copyright using blockchain

The Japanese company Sony has announced a transition to the next generation of copyright protection technology (DRM), which will use blockchain. The project will be developed by Sony Music Entertainment Japan and Sony Global Education.

At the initial stage, Sony is going to apply a rights management system to any digital content that uses blockchain technology. The system will be based on tools previously created by Sony for copyright management.

Blockchain is used to create systems, programs and information that are difficult to falsify or destroy. Initially, these systems were created to conduct public p2p transactions of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. However, the technology also has its own powerful potential to help Sony effectively protect digital private property.

Using blockchain, Sony will be able to track all content from creation to distribution and beyond. With this DRM, users will be able to identify content, its creation date, and its creator. According to company representatives, in the future this system will be able to work with texts, music, videos, games and VR content.

Walmart and Major League Baseball are also experimenting with blockchain security methods. This may mean that this approach to data protection may soon be available to all major publishers who suffer losses due to content pirates.
