On October 3, at the Smart Ports & Supply Chain Technologies conference, held in the Dutch city of Rotterdam, the development of a “smart port” in Valencia, Spain, was announced.
José García De La Guía, Head of Emerging Technologies at the Port of Valencia, is authorized to implement Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) in logistics to exploit the full cycle of goods movement in the seaport.
Señor Guia described the benefits of technology for logistics: reduction in the amount of paper used, reduction in maintenance time and a subsequent reduction in overall costs. He also emphasized that this technology will be used in many international ports in the future:
Starting from Valencia, we propose to use blockchain as a strategic approach to provide transparency in the supply chain for goods in the port, thereby expanding its capabilities beyond our port. This means that we plan to use cloud technologies not only with our partners at Port Community Systems, but also with everyone else.
It is noteworthy that Valencia is the second busiest port in the Mediterranean by volume, second only to the Port of Algeciras.
The Smart Ports & Supply Chain Technologies conference, organized in Rotterdam, was attended by representatives from the Port of Valencia, Antwerp (Belgium) and Algeciras (Spain). Blockchain Labs for Open Collaboration, a company based in Denmark, also joined the event.
