Coinbase Wallet app launches

Toshi, a decentralized wallet app developed by Coinbase, will now be called Coinbase Wallet. In a post on Medium, the company said the move goes beyond branding and is part of a “larger effort to attract investment in the product.”

Coinbase Wallet will have some new features. They are expected to turn the wallet into “the primary place for exploring the decentralized network” and its capabilities. In addition to the ERC-20 tokens that were available from Toshi, the new wallet will support Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash and Litecoin. Users will also be able to receive ICO tokens into their account, airdrop, store collectible cryptocurrencies and access leading decentralized exchanges directly from the application.

Coinbase also said that the new wallet will feature a “state-of-the-art storage model” that stores private keys in a “secure device enclave, accessed using biometric authentication technology.”

Coinbase plans to make Coinbase Wallet feature-rich so users can “explore all third-party decentralized applications.” The developers believe that the new wallet will help accelerate the adoption of cryptocurrencies and decentralized applications around the world.

Toshi was first launched last year. The wallet was inspired by the WeChat app, which handles a huge number of digital payments in China. Built like a mobile web browser, Toshi gives its users access to an open financial network. The application has a built-in reputation system that simplifies the process of rating other users and applications. Company representatives say that the application was developed with the goal of providing “access to financial services” to the majority of the world's population.
