Newspaper headlines and online articles declaring the imminent death of internal combustion engines and fossil fuels due to the world's transition to “clean energy” are premature, to say the least. To do this, first of all, the world needs “clean money” based on clean technologies.
Buying more environmentally friendly products, unfortunately, also means a higher price. Government subsidies in some countries have helped reduce the cost of green technologies, but today the willingness of politicians to use public money to reduce their costs is weakening.
Green cryptocurrencies will emerge in 2018, and with them new forms of investment and financing. This will be possible thanks to the combination of various technologies - blockchain and smart contracts. These cryptocurrencies will stimulate innovation and leadership, enable green shopping, and have the potential to solve some of our toughest political issues. Using blockchain technology, information on supplies in different sectors of the economy can be combined into a single global ledger. This will help identify the specific environmental benefits of new technologies—whether clean jet fuel, plant proteins or renewable energy—and market them. Such data will be added to “smart contracts”, which are already supported by some cryptocurrencies, such as Ethereum. The first “green cryptocurrencies” such as GENERcoin, EnergyCoin and SolarCoins already exist on the market. They can be used to purchase solid biofuel or local electricity exchange. SolarCoin, in turn, is paid to people who provide a certificate of use of renewable solar energy at their home or business.
Large corporations have already begun to use blockchain technology to streamline complex supply chains. The same technology will help monitor the level of purity of the product and give the consumer more confidence in the correct choice of an energy-free product. People's workplaces will become indistinguishable from living nature. Amazon's new headquarters in Seattle will feature new temperature- and humidity-controlled cubicles filled with rare plants.
