Hong Kong grants residence permit to blockchain specialists

As part of the country's new unique immigration policy, Hong Kong is offering jobs to experienced blockchain professionals from around the world who can contribute to the country's economic development.

This week, the Hong Kong government released its “In-Demand Occupation List,” which includes blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), data science, robotics, biometrics, and industrial/chemical engineering professionals.

The government attracts candidates by helping them quickly obtain residence permits under Hong Kong's Skilled Acceptance Scheme (QMAS). “Hong Kong brings together professionals from around the world with valuable skills, knowledge and experience to develop the country and their own careers,” said Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, Chairman of the Resource Commission.

Hong Kong’s Skilled Acceptance Scheme (QMAS) accepts citizens of any country over the age of 18 and seeks successful applicants who will contribute to Hong Kong’s economic competitiveness.

Applicants must meet certain pre-requisites before qualifying test. There are special “bonus points” for Blockchain professionals under the QMAS program.

Applicants who successfully pass the QMAS test will not need to find an employer before entering Hong Kong, as is usually the case when entering on a work visa.

Each candidate will also be required to demonstrate financial independence and education, typically a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or other institution of higher education. In some cases, documents confirming professional skills or technical qualifications will be accepted instead of a diploma.
