The second smartphone with cryptocurrency support created by a major electronics manufacturer will soon hit the market. Could this be the start of a trend for all manufacturers of similar devices?
Taiwanese consumer electronics manufacturer High Tech Computer Corporation (or HTC) will release its own phone focused on working with cryptocurrency. The company announced the creation of a “blockchain device” that will run on the Google Android operating system and will be called Exodus.
The phone is expected to have a universal wallet, as well as “built-in hardware” that will support cryptocurrencies and dApps. According to reports, HTC also wants to create its own network, with each phone serving as a node. Finally, the company is considering selling phones for cryptocurrency.
“We are excited that with Exodus we will be able to support core protocols such as Bitcoin, Lightning Network, Ethereum, Dfinity and many more,” said Phil Chen, responsible for creating Thenextweb. “We'd like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem, and we'll be announcing exciting new partnerships in the coming months.”
If you've been following the electronics market closely, you know that despite creating some great devices, HTC hasn't been doing well in recent years. In this context, one can imagine the company betting on cryptocurrency to create a vibrant brand and attract privacy-conscious youth as well as the tech-savvy crowd. However, many companies began research in this area much earlier than HTC. Therefore, there is a possibility that many devices will soon have built-in support for cryptocurrencies.
Earlier this month, details of the Sirin Finney were announced, an ultra-secure mobile device that keeps your cryptocurrency transactions completely private. The phone, which will be assembled by the same company that assembles the iPhone, will have a built-in wallet that uses cold storage. And in March of this year, the Chinese manufacturer Huawei, according to information from anonymous sources, began serious negotiations with Sirin Labs regarding the creation of a new device.
