A trader, whose identity is not publicized, converted a small amount of stolen NEM tokens to Litecoin via the dark web. The police immediately became aware of this, as the tokens were marked by the NEM Foundation. The attacker admitted to the police that he knew that the tokens were stolen from the trading platform.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department carefully monitored dark web websites and was able to determine that the hacker was offering some of the stolen tokens at a 15% discount. According to a local publication, the attacker planned to exchange NEM for Bitcoin.
