Ethereum developers decided to go even further, this time directly into space. The National Astronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has teamed up with the University of Akron to explore the possibilities of Ethereum blockchain technologies to improve space communications and navigation.
NASA awarded the university a $330,000 grant and three years to conduct research into a “sustainable networking and computing paradigm” using blockchain technology, which is behind smart contracts. The university said in a statement:
“This project will explore the capabilities of the Ethereum blockchain to develop a decentralized, secure networking and computing infrastructure for space exploration. Blockchain consensus protocols will be used to improve the sustainability of the infrastructure. We hope to be able to develop technology that can recognize and help avoid environmental threats, as well as perform many more tasks automatically."
Dr. Wei, who heads the research department, believes that when Provided the platform is built properly, it will help spacecraft carry out more missions and collect more information, while also giving scientists time to respond to environmental threats.
Thomas Kakpura, NASA's advanced communications program manager, believes the project is the first of its kind. Speaking about the research, he emphasized:
“This platform will help conduct decentralized and secure processing of NASA space network data. It also has huge potential for creating next-generation space systems, and will also ensure the transition of these algorithms to commerce.
Ethereum is becoming more and more popular every day, so this research is a relevant event. There is an opinion that the Ether registry can become the most popular smart contract platform of the twenty-first century.
