Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin appears to have lost more than $460 million as prices plummeted by more than 90% in Ethereum's protracted fall from January levels to today's disappointing numbers.
The network is now filled with snarky offers to raise a donation for Buterin, as his wallet currently contains only about $40 million at the current ETH price, down from $500 million on January 13.
During Ethereum's yearly high, his wallet contained about 3,700,000 ETH. Since then, he has not received any significant amounts, but has sent a total of 20,000 ETH, with a 10,000 ETH transaction taking place three days ago. It is easy to calculate that the value of the wallet was estimated at about $514 million at the peak ETH price of $1,448. In October, when Buterin responded to attacks by Nouriel Roubini, he was holding 365 thousand ETH, that is, approximately $72.8 million. In recent weeks, when the price of ETH approached $113, it is worth about $40 million USA
The price of Ethereum, like all other leading cryptocurrencies, is in free fall, and the market is in the red. All coins have seen double-digit declines in recent weeks, with only XRP appearing to lose just 8% to dethrone Ethereum from its stable second position and sit comfortably behind Bitcoin (BTC).
However, the main topic of comments on social networks was a sarcastic offer of help in the form of collecting donations for the “poor guy”, who is now worth only 40 million.
