The American electronic publication said it plans to tap the growing cryptocurrency market to overcome the problem of ad blocking, its main source of income. When visiting the site, users who use ad-blocking programs will see a window pop up on their screen asking them to allow the site to mine cryptocurrency on their computers. Salon will use the processors of users' computers "for calculations", the program will run "securely" and without requiring the installation of any additional software. The mining process will be handled by Coinhive, which has developed a program that runs in users' web browsers, allowing companies to mine monero coins worth $232.33. While scammers use these programs to attack various websites through which they mine coins on unsuspecting users' computers, Salon gives users the opportunity to volunteer their computers for mining if they want to go to the company's site without seeing ads.
Jordan Hoffner, chief executive of Salon, who previously worked as an executive at Google, said: "People don't want to see ads, and instead of dealing with that, we found an alternative the solution is another source of income and we already have the first readers who agreed to mining."
