The first version of the popular internet encyclopedia is being offered as a non-fungible token (NFT) at Christie's.
One of the co-founders of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales, said:
What you see on your screen is Wikipedia as it was first launched.
After the sale, the tokenized version of Wikipedia will remain publicly available. You can view it and make your own edits, but only for five minutes, after which the version will return to its original form. The new owner of NFT Wikipedia will have the right to close access to it at will.
Along with the NFT, Wales' personal iMac, which he used when launching the site, will be auctioned. The auction will last from December 3 to 15, with lots starting at $2,400 for Wikipedia and $600 for iMac.
Wales plans to use the funds received to develop its social network WT.Social.
