Crypto millionaire Dmitry Golubov is suspected by the National Agency of Ukraine for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP) of illegal enrichment and concealment of income using cryptocurrency.
Law enforcement agencies came to this conclusion after carefully studying the electronic declaration of the Verkhovna Rada deputy. The deputy explains the more than 14 million hryvnia declared in the document by various transactions with the Bitcoin cryptocurrency.
4376 Bitcoin Golubov, according to him, purchased back in November 2012, when the cost of one token was $11.77. However, he did not provide documents confirming the acquisition of the digital asset and the legality of the origin of the funds. It is unclear at what rate NAPC assessed the declarant’s cryptocurrency portfolio, but in the Agency’s opinion, the deputy declared false information and should bear responsibility under Article 366-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, and for illegal enrichment - under Article 368-2.
The findings of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau were sent to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau for further investigation.
For the deputy himself, the use of IT technologies for enrichment has become commonplace. Previously, Golubov was accused and even arrested on suspicion of stealing $11 million through the Visa and Mastercard payment systems. The businessman founded the web resource cardplanet.com, where it was possible to obtain confidential information of card account holders from around the world.
Such activities interested not only Ukrainian law enforcement officers, but also American investigators, and the Wall Street Journal, an authoritative publication, accused him of large-scale criminal activities. However, after representatives of the victims refused to participate in the trial, Golubov’s case was dropped.
Dmitry Golubov is not the only supporter of cryptocurrencies when it comes to explaining the origin of income.
In 2017, Odessa City Council deputy Dmitry Palpatine declared Bitcoin worth 3.5 billion hryvnia, leading the top 10 crypto holders in the country. And Kiev City Council deputy Sergei Maizel contributed 11.1 million hryvnia in Bitcoin and 3.8 million hryvnia in Ethereum to the declaration.
