The new mayor of New York will receive a salary in Bitcoin

New York Mayor-elect Eric Adams wants to make the city “the center of the cryptocurrency industry.”

In his Twitter, Adams said that he plans to receive his first three salaries in Bitcoin.

In an interview with Bloomberg this week, he committed to addressing the factors that are “hampering the development of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in our city.” He also supported the initiative of the mayor of Miami to issue his own cryptocurrency, and is going to launch a similar project in New York.

The MiamiCoin project has become quite successful. We will move in the same direction.

Since 2015, New York has operated the BitLicense system, which many have criticized for being overly hostile to cryptocurrencies. The BitLicense applies to entities that sell, buy, exchange, issue, or transfer cryptocurrencies.

New York residents can only buy and sell tokens from registered entities. At the moment, 105 virtual coins have been approved in the city.
