A new method of fraud with crypto wallets has appeared

The administration of the MetaMask crypto wallet warned its clients that scammers are sending emails to users requiring them to undergo verification - this is done supposedly in order to avoid account blocking. Cryptocurrency wallets are generally one of the favorite targets for various types of attackers. What attempts have already been made to steal money from accounts?

According to MetaMask, owners of crypto wallets began to receive mass mailings from fake developers who ask them to follow a link and enter personal data so that the wallet is not blocked. This is done in order to gain access to the account and use it to steal funds from a trusting user.

At the same time, the scammers did not take into account the fact that when registering a wallet there is no need to indicate an email address, so the MetaMask company itself has no way to include its clients in the email newsletter.

Not the first case

MetaMask clients have not been for the first time become a target for scammers. Previously, a large-scale phishing campaign was launched against them, as a result of which the owners of crypto wallets transferred more than 500 thousand dollars to the attackers. At that time, the scammers used fake MetaMask wallets and distributed phishing links using Google ads. In addition, the money of MetaMask users was stolen through fake Ethereum wallets, distributing a fake extension for the Google Chrome browser.

Other “targets”

The crypto market in general is a rather fertile field for all sorts of scammers. For example, three years ago, hackers tried to hack YouTube channels in order to then issue fake cryptocurrency to them. To do this, they sent “luring” emails to gain access to passwords. Subsequently, the hackers assigned the names of companies associated with digital currencies to these channels and, during video sessions, convinced the audience to transfer cryptocurrency to them. And Apple Corporation was even sued for damage caused by a fake fraudulent application in the App Store. After downloading it, the user lost almost 500 XRP tokens as a result of their theft in a fake crypto wallet.
